Independent paper magazine, devoted to travel culture, for its twelfth
edition, Cartography traveled to Brazil, La Gomera to Tangier, and in
West Texas.
BRAZIL. 21 Days
Itinerary: São Paulo––Cuiabà––Alta Floresta––Teles Pires–Cristalino
River––Rio de Janeiro
The issue opens up with a journey into Brazilian Modernism, a
reportage and a short documentary, shot by Cartography, visiting the
spaces that landscaped São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro from the 1950s,
and along the banks of the Cristalino river, in a natural reserve of
the Amazon rainforest.
Then, a dialogue between Domingo Milella artist and Francesco Zanot
curator on the future of image, starting from Milella’s
“archaeological photography” work.
LA GOMERA TO TANGERI. 9 Days.
Island hopping from a volcanic archipelago in the North Atlantic,
facing the Western Sahara, to Morocco. From the tiny La Gomera, with
its vast humid laurisilva forest, to Tangier, with views of Spain and
Gibraltar across the ocean.
Cartography is reporting from a research trip by the anthropologist
Alexander C. Trigg to La Gomera, on the trail of the tradition of
silbo, a whistling language still practiced today, handed down and
taught on the Spanish volcanic island.
WEST TEXAS. The Southwest USA. 16 Days.
Charting a geographic and anthropological path from Marfa to El Paso,
on the border with Mexico/New Mexico. A whimsical journey into the
American Southwest and its cultural fabric.
