Casa das Canoas 1951
Designed by Niemeyer as his residence in 1951, Casa das Canoas is considered one of the most significant examples of Brazilian modern architecture. The house is famed among history experts and art critics as elegantly summing up and ushering in the modern architecture and creative freedom that flourished in Europe and the Americas in this period.
The Oscar Niemeyer Foundation, created in 1988 and based in Rio de Janeiro, is a private non-profit institution whose main mission is to preserve, promote and manage the architect’s work. The foundation’s research and documentation centre houses the largest collection of books and documents on the architect. The archive comes from his offices in Rio de Janeiro and Paris, where he created projects for Europe, Africa and the Orient in the 1960s and 70s. The architect’s collection consists of architectural plans, texts, museum pieces, models and photographic and audiovisual materials.
